We research radical pesantrens in Indonesia whose alumnies have been involved in terrorist actitivies. To be clear, radical pesantrens are Islamic boarding schools which are privately funded and administered and has no explicit ties to, and very little oversight by, the Indonesian government and they advocate violence in any form, be it terrorism or violent jihad.
The radical pesantrens we research are linked to Jemaah Islamiyah and other terrorist or radical groups such as Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid and Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia. These pesantren have been accused of being the breeding ground for terrorists. In defense, they deny this accusation, stating that they merely teach Islam, not terrorism.
Our research is trying to find the answers for these questions: How do we group pesantrens into radical and non-radical pesantrens? What are radical pesantrens in Indonesia? How do we deal with radicalism in pesantrens? What are the issues? How do we deal with the issues?
We research 103 pesantrens and we hope we will finish the directory of these pesantrens by the end of 2014.
